The main features of steel frame construction
In steel frame construction, there are two main types: heavy steel frames and light gauge steel frames.
A steel structure is often used in conjunction with other structural systems, such as masonry, timber or light gauge steel construction, to support long spans. Steel beams can support long spans (e.g. for large windows).
Steel is a strong material both in tension and compression. This type of construction is comparable to timber in price and can be used either as a complete construction system or only for interior partitions.
When heavyweight construction would require excavation and extensive foundations for steeply sloping sites, light gauge steel construction could be an alternative.
As steel framing is strong and flexible, it is excellent at resisting earthquakes. It is easy to handle and erected quickly. It is often delivered prefabricated to site, and clearly identified for assembly. Insects and vermin can live in spaces between light steel framing, but steel won’t burn, but will deform under high heat.
CLIMATES OF ALL TYPES
In addition to its durability and long-lasting nature, steel framing is easy to install. Steel framing does not absorb water.
To reduce heat loss, all steel framing must include a thermal break – an insulating layer between steel framing and cladding.
As steel frame members are shaped in such a way that they are difficult to insulate, it is very important that the insulation be installed correctly to fit snugly inside the profiles, leaving no gaps in the insulation. As part of the insulation installation process, designers and builders should consider areas such as corners and above openings with multiple framing members. When the framing is being erected, insulation should be installed during construction rather than afterward.
Despite its poor sound insulation, steel can be provided with acoustic isolation systems. The system separates the steel framing from the linings to prevent sound from travelling to the neighbouring room through the steel. Light gauge steel framing systems are available for party walls between dwellings that are fire-rated.
Buildings made of steel can be recycled once their useful lives have ended.
